Mechanical and electrical retrofit in three stages

OÖN printing centre gets fit for the future
Success continues with 175 million newspapers printed annually

The Koenig & Bauer Commander has been at the heart of the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten printing centre in Pasching since 2003. In the coming months Koenig & Bauer will be retrofitting the press to make it fit for the future. The reelstands, towers, folders, press controls and Commander consoles will be upgraded both mechanically and electronically to the latest state of the art.
The press controls and consoles will be upgraded to the latest EAE technology. An ink density control system and a colour and cut-off register control system from QIPC are retrofitted. Inking units, reelstands and folders are mechanically overhauled. The spray bars will also be renewed and all the main drives serviced.
Koenig & Bauer will act as general contractor on the project. "Part of the press line will be 20 years old next year and does its job every day. We want to position ourselves properly for the future - because we still believe in the printed newspaper. With this retrofit we see ourselves very well positioned," says Ronald Sonnleitner, managing director of the printing centre. The control system retrofit will be carried out in three phases to ensure constant daily production. The project will be completed in winter 2022.
Thomas Potzkai, head of service Koenig & Bauer Digital & Webfed: "We have been working hand in hand for more than 20 years. Due to the pandemic we were confronted with having to make almost all the deadlines for this complex project online and it worked smoothly - this shows that years of trusting and continuous cooperation pay off."
175 million printed newspapers per year
The printing centre of the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten in Pasching is one of the most modern printing plants in Austria. 300,000 printing plates, 180,000 kilograms of printing ink and almost 12,000 tonnes of paper are consumed per year. Thanks to a total area of 1,200 square metres of solar panels, the company can supply itself with 90 per cent green electricity. The flagship of the company is the OÖ Nachrichten. In addition, monthly newspapers, weekly newspapers, association newspapers, free newspapers, newspaper supplements and flyers are printed.
