The ideal duo for high production performance in the mailroom: the Tempo 220 saddle stitcher (left) and the FlexLiner inserting system.

The ideal combination of the Tempo 220 and the FlexLiner were crucial for Krupp Druck's investment decision. From next February, the company, which is based in the German town of Sinzig, will stitch its weekly newspapers in A4-plus tabloid format using the high-performance Tempo 220 saddle stitcher and insert up to twelve inserts inline with a FlexLiner.

Krupp produces and publishes 36 different editions of the Blick aktuell weekly newspaper, which has a total circulation of 420,000 copies and split run editions of between 5,000 and 60,000 copies. The number of newspaper supplements rose by 20 percent in the current year alone, whether that be because previous standalone products are being inserted into newspapers owing to the minimum wage issue in Germany, because inserts have a greater value than electronic advertising or because readers appreciate the combination of a regional newspaper and pamphlets. In order to handle the significantly higher volumes, Krupp Druck has replaced/is replacing two fairly old saddle stitchers and two aging inserting systems with a Tempo 220 and a FlexLiner.

The long-standing company, which was established 139 years ago, opted for the Muller Martini solution because of the optimal combination of the two systems, explains Peter Krupp. "As such, Muller Martini is producing a customized connection between the Tempo 220 and the FlexLiner for us." The FlexLiner with its twelve feeders (six of them with stream feeders), the option for extension by four additional feeders, and the FlexPack package system with integrated top sheet application and strapping was commissioned in September. The Tempo 220 with a folder feeder, seven flat pile feeders (equipped with stream feeders) and a Robusto compensating stacker will go into operation next March at the latest, in order to stitch the 16-page folded signatures from the press into 32-page to 96-page newspapers. "That will give us much higher capacity, speed and productivity than before and put us in the position to establish new regional split run editions of Blick aktuell."
